Fondatore della modernità filosofica. Nel Discorso e nelle Meditazioni sospende ogni credenza, trova nel cogito un punto fermo, dimostra Dio, restaura il mondo come estensione. Mente e corpo sono sostanze distinte, collegate (con difficoltà) nella ghiandola pineale. Il metodo è evidenza, analisi, sintesi, enumerazione.
